Preschool Curriculum

The Creative Curriculum for Preschool, a proven research-based curriculum, serves as the foundation for our preschool curriculum at Scribbles.  It is based on six components:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • Social Studies

  • The Arts

  • Technology

A major piece of The Creative Curriculum is the play-based environment in which children learn.

The Creative Curriculum guides children's experiences in an environment that is most conducive to their development and learning and is linked to a valid and reliable assessment instrument designed to assess the child’s progress and development and guide program planning.

At Scribbles, teachers and families will serve as partners in the assessment and reflection of each child’s development and growth.

Four rigorous independent studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of The Creative Curriculum for Preschool. Each study found positive impacts from improved classroom quality, resulting in less discipline needs and stronger academic and social skill development.

Accordingly, all classrooms at Scribbles are designed by utilizing centers (interest areas) that address at least one developmental area. These centers include:

  • Dramatic Play (including full kitchen sets and dress up closets)

  • Technology (a center with a Dell computer and educational software)

  • Arts and Crafts (easels, paints, craft supplies)

  • Building Blocks (allows for construction and destruction)

  • Quiet Time Reading (books and a quiet reading area)

  • Science and Math

  • Carpet and Table Games.

Children are given blocks of free-choice time to work throughout the classroom as well as teacher guided activity time.

We believe that it is critical to instill a love of reading in our children at a very early age and children at Scribbles are read to from infancy to preschool.  A large emphasis of our program is on early literacy. All of the centers are print rich and give ample opportunities for children to journal about their play or to read.

Preschool Classrooms

The design and set up of our Preschool Classrooms is a core piece of our curriculum. The learning environment is critical to supporting children’s developmental needs and growth.

Each room is set up according to 10 interest areas organized around the 6 learning components in which children are developed and assessed — literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, and technology :

  • Blocks

  • Dramatic Play,

  • Toys and Games

  • Art

  • Library

  • Discovery

  • Sand and Water

  • Music and movement

  • Cooking

  • Computers (with educational games).

Each room is equipped with child-sized toilets and sinks. The design of our classrooms allows for structure, yet also allows enough autonomy for children to develop through discovery in their play based learning environment.

Young Preschool (Ages 2 1/2-3 1/2 years) provides a more structured space to allow an easy transition to the preschool room. The Young Preschool room is organized around centers (interest/learning areas) including:

  • Art

  • Dramatic Play

  • Story Time

  • Building and Blocks

  • Sensory-Motor and Fine Motor Development.

A unique aspect of the Young Preschool room is a direct view of planes arriving at the Bloomington Airport. The children can view planes landing and taking off throughout the day – a favorite activity of children at this age!
